Smokies: Diabetes: Beyond the Disease! Featuring Special Guest Lecturer Dr. Mark Hinkes

A diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) occurs every 1.2 seconds and a diabetic-related amputation occurs every 20 seconds, which points to a crisis in the diabetic community regarding the recognition and early intervention of diabetic-related foot conditions. Podiatrist Dr. Mark Hinkes DPM is a leading expert in this field, and through his research, has discovered a number of concerning statistics regarding DFUs including:

● 15 to 25% of patients with diabetes will develop an ulcer in their lifetime.
● Nearly 70% of all lower extremity amputations are PRECEDED by a foot ulcer.
● 38% of patients with diabetes who lose a leg will lose the other leg in 3 years.
● 70% of patients who lose a leg will not survive beyond 5 years.

The best way to prevent diabetics and pre-diabetics from incurring these issues is to screen them annually. In this 60-minute class, Dr. Hinkes shares his wealth of knowledge regarding: diagnostic signs of diabetes in the feet and legs, how diabetes affects the lower extremities, and the practice of safe pedicure services for this specific population.

Following this lecture, Dr. Hinkes will conduct a 60-minute deep-dive into Common Foot Problems. This complementary follow-up will include discussions on nail pathologies, bone and soft-tissue deformities, skin infections, nerve entrapments, heel and radicular pain, and biomechanics.

To conclude this informative workshop, NASP President, Vicki Malo, will lead a 60-minute hands-on tutorial on Comprehensive Foot Exams to prioritize kinesthetic learning in the prevention and treatment of diabetic-related foot conditions.
